The new guidelines mean that an estimated additional 31 million individuals in the United States now need treatment. Most of this newly defined population of individuals with hypertension is expected to be manageable with nonpharmacological interventions, although 4.2 million of these newly diagnosed patients will require antihypertensive medication.
